11-18-16 North Carolina Forest Service Update


CURRENT INCIDENT SYNOPSIS
  • NC Forest Service Managed Fires
    • Party Rock Fire (Lake Lure/Chimney Rock)
      • Rutherford, Buncombe, Henderson Counties
      • 6,712 acres burned, 32% contained
      • Estimated containment date - 12/1
      • 920 personnel reported on scene
    • Chestnut Knob Fire (South Mountains)
      • Burke County
      • 5,929 acres burned, 29% contained
      • Estimated containment date - 11/26
      • 262 personnel reported on scene
  • US Forest Service Managed Fires - 38,077 acres burned
    • 13 active wildfire incidents being tracked 
      • 4 are over 98% contained and are being monitored with minimal resources - 1,509 acres burned
      • 2 are > 90% contained but require active monitoring of lines becase of falling leaves burning
      • 2 merged into other fires
      • New Fire at Cathy Gap in Jackson County, 123 acres
      • 1,180 personnel assigned
    • Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
      • 755 acres burned by 15 fires, 75% contained 

Impacts to North Carolina
  • Total fire ban in Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests. 
  • Many NC State Parks closed to free up resources available.
  • Air quality in western and parts of central NC is classified as unhealthy due to smoke.
  • Multiple evacuations have been ordered, 1 shelter is open.
