Code Orange and Red air quality due to smoke in the Mountains and Foothills for Thursday.
Code Orange particle pollution due to smoke is occuring across portions of the Mountains and Foothills Thursday morning. Code Red particle pollution is occuring near and immediately downwind of active wildfires. The worst smoke appears to be occuring in Macon, southern Transylvania, southern Jackson, Polk, Rutherford, McDowell, southern Mitchell, and northern Burke counties. Poor air quality may also be occuring in Watauga county near the Horton Road fire. A weak front is passing through the state this morning. The front was brought some light showers to the mountains and the northern half of the state. In the wake of the front, it will become partly sunny with light southwest winds. The worst air quality will be near and downwind of active wildfires, mainly in Macon, southern Transylvania, southern Jackson, Polk, Rutherford, McDowell, southern Mitchell, and northern Burke counties. Poor air quality may also be occurring in Watauga county near the Horton Road fire. Code Orange air quality is possible in western North Carolina further away from the fires. Particle pollution outside areas of smoke will generally hover within the low to middle Code Yellow or Moderate range.
