Start date: November 20, 2016
Location: 5 miles NW of Marion, NC
Cause: Human caused, incendiary likely.
Total Personnel: 411 personnel
Current Size: 3,163 Acres
Containment: 91%
Resources Assigned: Thompson’s Eastern Montana Type II Incident
Management Team is working closely with local NC Forest Service, US Forest
Service, and McDowell County partners. Resources assigned to the incident: 1 - Type
I crew, 11 – Type II crews, 23 engines, 1 dozer, and 1 helicopter.
Current Status: Monday
firefighters finished constructing the last portion of direct control line on
the Northwest portion of the fire. On
all other areas of the fire personnel worked on rehabilitating places that were
disturbed while suppressing fire in order to limit future erosion from current and future precipitation.
Planned Actions: Today many of the firefighters will be working
on projects around the community due to the rain. Rehabilitation work will
resume once the ground dries up enough to successfully complete the work. Other firefighters not needed for
rehabilitation activities will be sent to other fires, or back to their homes.
Weather: The fire today is
expected to be in the high 50’s with rain continuing into the afternoon. Over night the fire received approximately
.75”-1” of precipitation. While
precipitation is expected to taper off Tuesday afternoon, another round of
heavier rain is expected into the area Wednesday. While this rain will not change the existing
drought conditions, it is likely enough precipitation to moderate fire behavior
in the near term.
