11/23/16 Rock Mountain Morning Update

For a downloadable, printable version click here.

Yesterday’s Activities:  Fire behavior moderated significantly on Tuesday and firefighters took full advantage. Winds pushed the fire back toward itself on the north. Crews scouted and prepared old trails to be used as fireline behind homes, connecting and strengthening them with dozer lines. Betty’s Creek and Patterson Gap residents assisted the firefighters by moving firewood away from their homes, cleaning their gutters and roofs and moving outdoor furniture away from structures or inside their homes. The containment line near Tate City has been extended to the end of Tallulah Road into North Carolina.

Today’s Operations:   Operations today will again focus on protecting homes and property east of the fire in the areas of Betty’s Creek Road and Patterson Gap. The structure protection group will be staffed with additional personnel to strengthen and build on their work from yesterday. All dozer lines to protect the area are expected to be completed today. Containment efforts will continue on the northern edge of the fire.

Weather: Relative humidity values remain low. However, they will be increasing over the next 24 to 36 hours as another weak front influences the fire area. Higher elevations will be a bit drier than the valleys where there could be 100% humidity values from this evening into Thursday. There is a slight chance of some very light showers tonight and tomorrow but no significant rain.
