Dobson 3 Fire Update
Cherokee
NC – We would like to
wish everyone a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
We would like to express our sincere
thanks to the community of Cherokee for all of their hospitality and support
during our time here.
The threat of wild land fire continues
to be extreme due to drought conditions persisting in the area. Please remain
vigilant in preventing and reporting wildfires in the area.
A Burn ban remains in effect for the Qualla
Boundary
Until further notice.
Fire suppression crews continue patrol
all fires within the Qualla Boundary.
Safety of the firefighters and of the community is the number the one
priority as the firefighters
go about their daily responsibilities.
Fire prevention is extremely important
in the community. Fires are started by
cigarettes, sparks from vehicles in the dry grass, outdoor fires of any kind,
and campfires that are not put out cold.
The public can help prevent forest fires by being proactive in observation
and reporting of fires. With the Holiday weekend upon us the Cherokee Tribe and
the BIA asks you to take care with your holiday celebrations. Please report any
fires immediately.
All fires currently burning are under
investigation by local law enforcement.
Thirty five fires have burned within the Qualla Boundary since
October. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is
seeking information regarding arson fires on Indian Lands through the WeTip
Program. Up to $10,000 is being offered
through this anonymous program. WeTip
can be contacted through their website: www.wetip.com or by calling their hotline at
1-800-47-ARSON.
