Resources Assigned: Thompson’s Eastern Montana Type II Incident
Management Team is working closely with local NC Forest Service, US Forest
Service, and McDowell County partners. Resources assigned to the incident: 1 - Type
I crew, 4 – Type II crews, and 5 engines.
Current Status: Firefighters
were prevented from working on the fire Tuesday morning due to rain, but were
able to access the fire in the afternoon.
Firefighters used the unexpected break in the weather to develop
rehabilitation plans that can be implemented later in the week after the next
wave of rain. Many resources were
released Tuesday with many heading to the Sevier County Fire in Gatlinburg, TN.
Planned Actions: Firefighters will be working on rehabilitation
projects this morning in the accessible areas of the fire. If the next round of rain this afternoon
requires the firefighters to leave the fire area, they will spend the afternoon
working on projects at the North Carolina Mountain Training Center. Other firefighters not needed for
rehabilitation activities will be sent to other fires, or back to their homes.
Weather: Rain gauges in the
fire area showed an average of 2” of rain Tuesday. Another round of rain is expected into the
area this afternoon with the potential for 1” of precipitation. It is important to note that this rain
inhibits fire potential in the short term, but the fuels will dry out quickly
without continued precipitation.
