11/27/16 - Party Rock Fire - 12:00pm Update

With rain in the forecast for Monday night, fire crews are working to ensure that fire lines carved during the past three weeks will not contribute to erosion or
water quality issues. “We have two days of work to get this buttoned up and make things ready for the rain,” Incident Commander Link Smith told fire fighters at this morning’s briefing, “so let’s sprint to the finish and leave things in good shape for the residents and the forest service.”

The fire is now 85% contained but residents and visitors are reminded that fire crews are still actively working and that the burned area still contains many hazards. Falling leaves contributed to several areas of “re-burn” yesterday and smoke was visible inside the fire lines. Fire fighters are asking everyone to stay on the paved roads, out of the burned area, and to please move out of the way for emergency traffic.

After serving meals to fire crews for the past 12 days, the North Carolina Baptist Men’s Convention will be taking down its field kitchen and heading home. We want to thank them, and the many, many local volunteers, and volunteers from across North Carolina, who took time out of their lives to serve fire crews thousands of hot meals and sack lunches. The Lake Lure Inn, which pitched in early in the fire, will be stepping up again to provide meals starting tonight.

Party Rock Fire information can be found on INCIWEB (inciweb.nwcg.gov/) or on the Town of Lake Lure website (www.townoflakelure.com/). A public information center phone line is open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. at 828-513-2500. ###
