Wildfire Fact Sheet - Pinnacle Mountain Fire

There will be a Public Meeting for the Pinnacle Mountain Fire today (Sunday) at 4:00pm at the Palmetto Cove RV Park - 521 Table Rock Road, Cleveland, SC. Fire managers and natural resource advisors will provide a fire and operations update.

Fire Activity:  Good progress was made on the burnout on the north side of the Pinnacle Mountain Fire on Saturday.  Crews were able to burn next to established firebreaks from the state line down to the Slickum Falls Road.  The fire crossed this road in one spot, so firefighters will be returning to this area today to encircle this “slopover” with a firebreak.  The fire was held at the state line with help from NC Forest Service personnel. Crews patrolled the edge of the fire and cooled hot spots with the help of helicopter bucket drops where needed.

Today, firefighters plan to continue the burnout operation along the Slickum Falls Road, proceeding southward toward the Table Rock Reservoir. They will also continue actions to prevent the fire from spreading further west along the fireline that runs from the White Oak Mountain area south to the Saluda River. Crews will work on hot spots near the fire’s edge although smoke may be visible until the fire is completely extinguished.

Fire Size: 9,566 acres

Containment: 47%

Evacuations: No current evacuations

Estimated Costs to Date: $3.3 Million

Closures: Table Rock State Park remains closed as is its Trail System. Additionally, trail closures from Caesar’s Head to Sassafras have begun in preparation for burnout operations on Thursday. Table Rock State Park is expected to re-open in stages once State Park and Forestry Commission officials deem conditions are safe for the public. The Table Rock Trail System will remain closed until a damage assessment can be made, hazards cleared and repairs made. Structures: Structure protection teams are staged in high risk areas holding line, evaluating homes for risk and mitigating risks where possible. Structures potentially threatened are: Pickens Co. (112), Greenville Co. (523), and Transylvania Co., NC (171). Populations affected are Pickens Co. (122), Greenville Co. (187), and Transylvania Co. (132).

Fire Crews/Resources: Type III incident management team, four Type II hand crews, three engines, two Type III Helicopters, four Type I Helicopters, nine dozers, two water tenders, two fire tracks and 255 personnel assigned.

Injuries: No injuries have been reported.
