Cooler and drier conditions are in store for today, with partly sunny skies expected across the state. Winds will be lighter today, but still gusty at times. West-northwesterly winds will gust 25-35 MPH across the mountains and 10-20 MPH across the remainder of the state. The dry weather will continue on Friday and Saturday, before showers move into the western part of the state late Saturday night. Rain showers will spread eastward during the day on Sunday. Snow showers are possible early Sunday morning across the higher elevations (generally above 3,000’), before transitioning to rain during the day. Little or no snow accumulation is currently expected. Scattered showers will continue on Monday, with more significant rainfall expected on Tuesday.
This week’s drought monitor update is similar to last week’s map. It is important to note that this week’s update does not take into account the rainfall received over the past 36-48 hours. The entire state is forecast to receive over 1” of precipitation over the next seven days, with heavier amounts over the driest areas in southwest NC. These rainfall amounts will be helpful, but it will take multiple-significant precipitation events to put a large dent in the drought across western NC. The southwest corner of the state has rainfall deficits of 10-20” below normal over the last 120 days.
